Karnataka govt likely to withdraw order for extending working hours to 10 from 8

Bengaluru, May 27 (KNN) The Karnataka Government is now thinking about quashing its earlier order to increasing working hours for labourers to 10 from 8 in manufacturing industries.

If this happens, Karnataka will be the third state to do so after Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Migration of lakhs to labourers from states have led to a massive crisis of workforce. Also, the Corona crisis has led to units cutting their staffs and increasing the working hours of existing workers to ensure social distancing.

On May 22, the BS Yediurappa government had said that it is increasing the working hours to 10 in a day and 60 in a week for three months, on direction on the Centre.

The move was immediately criticized by the labour unions across the country saying it is against the norms of International Labour Organization (ILO).

On Tuesday, Karnataka’s Labour Minister Shivram Hebbar said that the state government is ascertaining on what grounds Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh governments had withdrawn the order.

“We will take action, only if we are convinced,” he had said. (KNN Bureau)
