Thiruvananthapuram, Sept 23 (KNN) Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) is establishing a world-class life sciences park here as a geographic cluster of industries and R&D institutions in the fields of biotechnology, biomedical devices, pharmaceuticals and other domains of life sciences.

The name of the proposed Life Sciences Park has been finalised as ‘BIO 360’, which symbolises ‘three sixty degrees of innovation’, as the tagline of its logo highlights.  One of the most reputed firms of architects based in Thiruvananthapuram has been awarded the work of developing the master plan for ‘BIO 360’.

KSIDC, the premier investment promotion agency of the Kerala government, was entrusted with the task of developing life sciences as a top destination in the country for life sciences based industries and R&D institutions.

The park will have state of the art office space, incubation centre and ready to occupy lab modules with support infrastructure facilities.

Besides, the park would provide developed plots for large and integrated bio companies to set up their campuses and ready-to-use modular officers, wet and dry lab space for intermediate, small and start-up companies.

The first phase of the project is envisaged to be established in 75 acres of land located near Kazhakkoottam, one of the fast emerging industrial townships in the state capital on private partnership basis.

Based on a proposal submitted by KSIDC, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) has sanctioned financial support for a Biotech Incubation Centre within ‘BIO 360’.

Possibilities of establishing a ‘Biomedical Research Park’ within ‘BIO 360’ (envisaging partnership of one of the national-level R&D institutions, and funding support from Government of India) is being explored by KSIDC.

Currently, KSIDC is in discussion with a few companies which have evinced preliminary interest in setting up their manufacturing/research infrastructure within ‘BIO 360.

In this context, KSIDC has invited bids from consultants for rendering engineering, design and consultancy services for preparation of detailed project report for different infrastructural development works (in approximately 75 acres of land) for ‘BIO 360’.

KSIDC has already taken possession of 40 acres of land for the project.  The cost of the project is likely to be in the range of Rs 300 crores.

KSIDC is the pivotal agency of the Government of Kerala for developing and promoting industrial and infrastructure projects in the state. Besides attracting domestic and foreign investments to the industrial and infrastructure sectors in Kerala, KSIDC plays an important role in stimulating, financing and facilitating the development of medium and large scale industries in the state.

Kerala is designated as one of the 34 biodiversity spots in the world.  It boasts diversity of forests and mountain ranges, numerous rivers, splendid flora and fauna, and all-enveloping verdant vegetation.

Last month Chief Minister Oommen Chandy laid the foundation stone for 'BIO 360'. (KNN/SD)
