Pune, Oct 24 (KNN)  The Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board (MSAMB) is keen to supply food products to all regions of the state, including the Maharashtra Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The Board wishes to supply consumers in MMR with commodities such as fruits, vegetables and other MSAMB branded consumable items.

In this context, the board is seeking suppliers from different cooperatives of consumer goods to be service providers.

MSAMB was established in 1984, under section 39A of Maharashtra Agricultural Produce Marketing (Development & Regulation) Act.  It has done pioneering work in the field of agricultural marketing in the state and has achieved success in various areas.

The Government of India had launched a new scheme on Vegetable Initiative for Urban Clusters (VIUC) during 2011-12 as a sub-scheme of Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) for addressing all concerns related to demand and supply side of the vegetable sector, enhancing vegetable production and productivity and encouraging establishment of an efficient supply chain in one major urban center in each State which is either the State capital or any other city having a population of one million or above.

In Maharashtra, Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) region is covered under the scheme. The scheme encourages mobilization of farmers into groups/ associations and their tie-up with financial institutions and aggregators.

Maharashtra is a leading fruit and vegetable producing state in the country. It contributes 6 per cent of production of vegetable in the country. The area under vegetable crops is about 4.10 lakh ha. The total production is 50.02 lakh M.T. per year and the productivity is more than 12.50 M.T. The present supply of vegetable to Mumbai city is about 6 lakh MT from within Maharashtra State against the requirement of 10 lakh MT for a population of about 200 lakh people. The remaining 4 lakh MT comes from outside the State. Thane and Raigad are the two main districts identified for production enhancement by bringing in additional 3000 ha under vegetables, since Nasik and Pune are already producing substantial quantity of vegetables.

MSAMB an ISO-9001 certified organization established under section 39A of Maharashtra Agricultural Produce Marketing (Development and Regulation) Act, 1963.

Being an apex body MSAMB has important role in developing, coordinating and promoting the activities of the agricultural marketing in Maharashtra, and shouldering the responsibility of planning for their growth and development. (KNN/ST/ES)
