Amazon Web Services to Invest $8.2 Billion in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Mar 4 (KNN) Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon, is set to invest approximately USD 8.2 billion in India's western state of Maharashtra over the next few years.

The announcement was made by India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on Monday, highlighting the country’s push for local cloud data storage.

According to a report by the International Data Corporation, India’s cloud services market is projected to reach an estimated USD 24.2 billion by 2028.

The growing demand for digital infrastructure has prompted major global tech firms to increase their investments in the region.

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, stated that along with the financial investment, the initiative would also contribute to substantial employment growth.

He added that the investment is expected to materialise by 2029-2030, bringing advanced cloud computing technologies to India.

AWS plans to deploy its own graphics processing units (GPUs), state-of-the-art cloud management services, and other cutting-edge technologies as part of its expansion.

Amazon already operates two major data centers in India—one in Mumbai, launched in 2016, and another in Hyderabad, established in 2022.

The move aligns with the company’s broader strategy of strengthening its cloud infrastructure in high-growth markets.

This latest investment comes after Amazon’s 2023 announcement of an additional USD 2 billion earmarked for boosting its e-commerce operations in India.

As Asia’s third-largest economy continues its rapid digital transformation, AWS’s investment marks a significant milestone in India's cloud technology and data storage landscape.
