Meerut Citizens Forum commissions study to quadruple district GDP by 2027

Meerut, Oct 21 (KNN) The Meerut Citizens Forum (MCF) has engaged Manak Chand Singhi retired economist (Indian Economic Services) to Government of India in a study to find a strategy for an accelerated growth of Meerut’s GDP.

As a district level initiative it aims to contribute in achieving Uttar Pradesh’s goal of USD 1 trillion set by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

This was announced on Thursday during an interactive discussion on increasing Meerut’s GDP organised by MCF in the city.

Rajendra Agrawal, Member of Parliament from the Meerut constituency and Amit Agarwal, MLA from Meerut Cantt were present on the occasion.

Representing Federation of Indian Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises (FISME) at the meeting, Secretary General Anil Bhardwaj highlighted the tremendous potential Meerut possesses to grow economically and said that it is one of the few cities that has more than 12 Industrial clusters.

“Most prominent among them are - Jwellery, Sports. It is also an Agricultural belt which works to its advantage. There is also scope for leveraging Meerut’s engineering capability,” he said.

Bhardwaj further said that the plan going forward would be to form a working group and work on an action plan based on the data.

“Also there would be cluster specific discussions so that common policy related issues, sector specific technology and common infrastructure problems could be better addressed. It would also help to make National and State level recommendations and seek assistance from MP and MLA on behalf of State Government,” he suggested.

The strengths and opportunities were discussed by the stakeholders from different sectors such as medical, education analysing sectoral contribution.

Some of the key suggestions noted were skill development, women participation in labour workforce and value addition in sports and defence industry.

It has also been proposed to set up the Meerurt Industrial Development Authority and they underlined the role of key stakeholders such as administration, municipality and civil society.  (KNN Bureau)
