Shillong, Jun 17 (KNN) In an effort to ensure sustainable use of natural resources for improved livelihood and striving towards an overall balanced economic development, the Meghalaya government proposes to adopt organic farming of horticulture crops.

The state Department of Agriculture wants to implement the project “Adoption and certification of organic farming of horticulture crops”.

It will facilitate farming groups for conversion of conventional field/farm to organic, ensure necessary technology transfer as well as supply of organic/bio-inputs to farmers. It will ensure necessary documentation with the help of identified agency and ensure organic certification with ensured market for the certified organic produce.

Towards this end, the state government is inviting bids from experienced organisations for implementation of the proposed projects.

Products of organic farming are clearly identified through certification and labelling. Consumers take a conscious decision on how their food is produced, processed, handled and marketed. The consumer therefore has a strong influence over organic production, the Meghalaya Agriculture Department said. (KNN/ST)
