MSMEs map potential in defence sector due to closure concerns in Trichy, Tamil Nadu

Chennai, Feb 26 (KNN) With closure concerns circling MSMEs, the small industries are surveying potential sectors in defence to avail manufacturing orders and produce components locally as part of Trichy engineering cluster.

This move is taken as fresh orders from BHEL has dwindled over the years impacting 450 odd MSMEs affiliated to BHEL small scale industries (Bhelsia).

As desperate efforts to keep the industry alive, small scale industries in the district have identified parts of Arjun battle tank that can be manufactured locally. 

For this reason, a group of MSMEs guided by the Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation (TIIC) visited Combat Vehicles Research and Development Estate (CVRDE) in Avadi near Chennai and support of BHELTrichy has been sought. 

It is likely that an MoU will be signed between CVRDE and TIIC to capitalise on the opportunity. 

Local MSMEs will be supported by the ministry of defence to manufacture defence components under the Make in India programme. 

The authority will offer support in form of skill development and training. (KNN Bureau)
