New Delhi, Jan 16 (KNN) The prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is finding it difficult to source essential sewing machines and finishing equipment for its design laboratories.

The bids invited earlier saw a poor response and so the institute in J&K is now forced to seek fresh bids.

Sewing machines are essential for fashion students, be it to stitch a unique creation, design or to do a mend job.  They also help in specific functions such as creating button holes, stretch stitches for perfect knitwear, decorative stitches for embellishment, free arm options for accurate cuffs and detail sewing.

NIFT opened a campus in the Kashmir valley last year in a bid to provide technical education and generate employment opportunities for local youth.  Offering full time courses in fashion and textiles, it trains local youth in fashion designing and fashion management leading them towards creativity and innovation.

NIFT is a leading fashion institute in India, set up in 1986 under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.  It is an institution of design, management and technology for the international fashion business.

It has been granted statutory status under the act of Parliament of India in 2006, empowering the Institute to award degrees and other academic distinctions.  NIFT is the founder member of "Fashion Schools' Foundation of the World", which comprises 34 fashion schools worldwide.   Many notable designers of India are NIFT alumni.   (KNN/ES)
