Pay minimum wage to labourers as per SC Order or face punishment: Delhi Govt warns employers

New Delhi, Dec 4 (KNN) The Delhi Government has warned employers to ensure minimum wage, as per the SC order, is given to the labourers and workers in the national capital, failing which the employers shall be entitled to three years imprisonment and fine of upto Rs 50,000.

In an notification published in all newspapers today, Gopal Rai, Labour Minister of Delhi, issued the warning and also gave ‘Sharmik Helpline No-155214’ for the labourers who seek help.

Under the Minimum Wages (Delhi) Amendment Act, 2017, employers are required to pay minimum rates of wages to labourers/workers of Delhi, specified under the unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled category as per the Supreme Court order.

As per the new legislation, Delhi’s minimum wages for unskilled workers is Rs 14,000 per month (Rs 538 per day), for semi-skilled worker the rate is Rs 15,400 per month (Rs 592 per day) and for skilled category the rate is Rs 16,962 per month (Rs 652 per day).

The Delhi government said that the wages are to be compulsorily disbursed only by cheque or bank transfer directly into the workers account.

In case an employer is found guilty of paying wages less than the stipulated minimum rates, the term of punishment will be three years.

The maximum amount of fine imposed under the amended Act is Rs 50,000, said the notification.

In case of non-payment of minimum wages, the workmen can also seek help of ‘Sharmik Helpline No-155214’ or can approach the district labour office concerned, the notification added.

The Minimum Wages (Delhi) Amendment Act, 2017 came into force on May 5, 2018 and consequent upon Supreme Court order dated October 31, 2018, the applicable rates of minimum wages came into effect from November 1, 2018.
