Punjab High Court puts stay order on revised minimum wages from backdate

Ludhiana, Feb 8 (KNN) The Punjab High Court has temporarily stopped the order issued on the revised minimum rates of wages in Punjab with retrospective effect from 1st March 2020 to 1st September 2020 introduced by Labour Commission of Punjab.

The state government of Punjab had raised the minimum wage from Rs 8776.83 to Rs 9192.72 which were based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) and due on 1st March, 2020.

Due to which concerns were raised by Chamber of Industrial & Commercial Undertakings (CICU) following the increase in the minimum wage along with the 20 months old date.

Looking at the recent development with the stay order, S. Upkar Singh Ahuja, President & Pankaj Sharma, General Secretary, CICU said, “We had filed a writ on Punjab Government’s notification on ST/17065 of 2021 dated 30th November, 2021 issued by the Labour Commission, Punjab, in which it has erroneously revised minimum rates of wages with retrospective effect from 1st March 2020 to 1st September 2020.”

“Punjab government is well known about the impact of the pandemic on the industry in Punjab and still they are imposing numerous notification, which is not acceptable by the industry,” the senior officials added.

CICU’s legal team and Advocate Shrey Goyal from Emerge Legal (legal Consultants) coordinated the process of writ in High Court and represented the current situation of the industry and gave a clear view to consider issuing a notice regarding stay. (KNN Bureau)
