Punjab Agricultural University Issues Heat Advisory for Farmers and Animal Owners

Ludhiana, Apr 9 (KNN) Weather experts from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) have raised an alert about an impending heat wave expected to sweep across North India in the coming days.
Both day and night temperatures have already been recorded 4–5°C above normal in the first week of April, raising serious concerns for crop health and public safety.
P.K. Kingra, Head of the Department of Agricultural Meteorology and Climate Change at PAU, stated that temperatures are projected to rise by an additional 2–4°C.
“Such conditions could become more intense, as the India Meteorological Department has forecast heat wave conditions at isolated locations across the state,” she said.
In an advisory to farmers, Kingra highlighted that while most rabi crops are nearing maturity, late-sown vegetables and fruit crops are vulnerable to heat-induced stress and increased water requirements.
She recommended light, need-based irrigation and maintaining soil moisture to safeguard crop yields. Use of straw mulch was also advised to protect tender plants from heat.
Kingra further warned of the heat's impact on livestock. “Animals should be kept indoors, with access to cool, clean water and a balanced diet. Exotic breed cows, in particular, may need fans or showers to reduce heat stress,” she said.
Residents have been urged to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours and stay well-hydrated. PAU’s warning serves as a timely reminder for both rural and urban populations to prepare for the rising temperatures and take necessary precautions.
