Punjab To Install 20 MW Rooftop Solar On Govt Buildings In 2025-26
Chandigarh, Feb 17 (KNN) The Punjab government has announced plans to install an additional 20 megawatts (MW) of rooftop solar photovoltaic capacity on government buildings during the 2025-26 fiscal year, building upon its existing successful solar infrastructure program.
Punjab New and Renewable Energy Sources Minister Aman Arora reported on Sunday that the state has already achieved significant progress in its solar initiative, with 4,474 government buildings currently equipped with rooftop solar panels.
These installations, totaling 34 MW in capacity, generate more than 49 million units of electricity annually. The grid-connected solar systems provide multiple operational advantages, according to Minister Arora.
By generating electricity at the point of consumption, the installations help reduce distribution network losses while contributing to the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited's (PSPCL) renewable purchase obligation targets.
The systems are designed to feed excess daytime power production back into the grid, enhancing overall grid stability.
This expansion aligns with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann's administration's commitment to strengthening clean energy infrastructure across Punjab.
The initiative has gained particular significance as solar photovoltaic technology has emerged as a preferred renewable energy source, offering both environmental and economic benefits.
The state government emphasises that these solar installations serve multiple objectives beyond power generation. The systems contribute to greenhouse gas reduction efforts, support climate change mitigation, and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.
Additionally, the initiative promotes local economic development by creating employment opportunities in the renewable energy sector while delivering substantial cost savings through reduced electricity bills for government facilities.
