Cabinet Approves Rs 13,037 Cr Jaipur Metro Phase-2 Project

Jaipur, Apr 9 (KNN) The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project with an estimated cost of Rs 13,037.66 crore.

The proposed new Metro corridor is 41 km long and is expected to ease vehicular traffic in the pink city.

The project will be implemented by Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited (RMRCL), a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan.

The new Metro corridor will run from Prahladpura to Todi Mod and include 36 stations.

The proposed alignment is designed to connect key economic and social hubs across the city, improving accessibility to major industrial areas, transport nodes, healthcare institutions and residential zones, thereby facilitating smoother and more efficient urban mobility.

Currently, the operational Phase-1 corridor—spanning 11.64 km from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar—records an average daily ridership of around 60,000 passengers. The addition of Phase-2 is expected to significantly increase ridership, enhance the share of public transport, and reduce reliance on private vehicles.

The project has undergone multi-level appraisal, including inter-ministerial consultations and evaluation by the Public Investment Board. It has achieved an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) above the benchmark threshold of 14 per cent, indicating strong socio-economic viability.

An official release said that funding for the project will be structured through equity contributions from the Centre and the state government, along with subordinate debt and multilateral financing, in line with the Metro Rail Policy, 2017.

Scheduled for completion by September 2031, Jaipur Metro Phase-2 is expected to reduce traffic congestion, lower vehicular emissions and improve connectivity for residents, workers and tourists. The project is aligned with Rajasthan’s Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Policy-2025 and broader national goals for sustainable urban transport.
