Russia-Ukraine war impacts Uttar Pradesh’s ‘City of Apparel’

New Delhi, Mar 5 (KNN) The ongoing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has hit the apparel industry in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar which is declared as the ‘City of Apparel’ under State government’s one district one product scheme.

This recent international events comes as a second major challenge in two years after the covid-19 pandemic which severely impacted the apparel industry in the district.

As per media reports, about 3,000 factories in the district manufacture apparels and 10 per cent of their annual exports till 2020 were delivered to Russia and Ukraine.

Lalit Thukral, President of Noida Apparel Export Cluster (NAEC) told the press, “The Russia-Ukraine war has hit us hard as we were just coming out of the pandemic.”

He said that traders are unlikely to get paid in time for their exports under the dollar-rouble conversion as the Russian currency has hit historic lows owing to heavy sanctions from the west.

“Due to this payments (in dollars) for readymade garments already exported to Russia and other European countries are stuck,” he added. (KNN Bureau)
