Service tax exemption for hotels, restaurants in Uttarakhand

New Delhi, Sept 19 (KNN)  Providing relief to battered hotel and tourism industry in Uttarakhand, Government has exempted levying the Service Tax on renting of a room in a hotel and guest houses meant for residential or lodging purposes.

The exemption valid from the period September-17, 2013 to March-31, 2014 would also cover services provided in relation to serving of food or beverages by a restaurant, eating joint or mess provided to any person in the State of Uttarakhand.  

“The recent floods and landslides have caused extensive damage in the State of Uttarakhand and have adversely affected the life of the common man in the state. There is a need to provide support to ensure sustenance for the local population by revival of the hospitality industry,” the official notification of the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, noted.

The exemption shall cover services by way of renting of a room in a hotel, inn, guest house, club, campsite or other commercial place meant for residential or lodging purposes.  (KNN/AB)
