Tamil Nadu Strengthens Position As India's Leading Textile Exporter In 2024-25

Chennai, Apr 25 (KNN) Tamil Nadu has maintained its position as India's top textile exporting state during the 2024-25 fiscal year, significantly widening its lead over Gujarat, the second-highest exporter.

USD The southern state contributed USD 7.99 billion to India's total textile exports of USD 36.61 billion, capturing a 26.81 percent share of the national total.

This represents substantial growth from the previous fiscal year when Tamil Nadu exported textile goods worth USD 7.15 billion, accounting for 20.78 percent of India's total textile exports of USD 34.43 billion, according to data available on the Centre's Niryat portal.

The state has increased its lead over Gujarat by more than 700 basis points in 2024-25.

Maharashtra ranked third in textile exports with a significantly lower contribution of USD 3.83 billion, representing 12.84 percent of the national total.

The composition of India's textile exports shows readymade garments as the largest category at USD 15.99 billion, followed by cotton yarn/fabrics/madeup and handloom products at USD 12.06 billion, and man-made yarns/fabrics/madeups at USD 4.87 billion. The remainder was distributed among handicrafts, carpets, and jute manufacturing.

Industry experts note that Bangladesh's Generalised Scheme of Preferences status with the European Union is set to expire in 2027, prompting many international buyers to consider India as their next sourcing destination.

The growth in textile exports also reflects improvements in logistics, port infrastructure, and increased government responsiveness to exporters' needs, factors that have collectively bolstered India's textile export capabilities.
