Textile exporters, traders suffer big losses in Surat fire

Surat, May 29 (KNN)  Losses worth several crores of rupees were suffered by textile traders and exporters when a devastating fire gutted the Orchid building in Poona area of Gurajat’s textile city of Surat today.

According to President, Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association (FOSTTA), Sanjay Jagnani, the Orchid building where the fire broke out houses about 85 warehouses and offices of textile traders and exporters.

There are over 140 textile markets housing more than 65,000 textile shops here.  Each market has an average staff of more than 15 security guards.

The textiles traders have a daily turnover of Rs 110 crore.

 Surat has witnessed 3 major fire outbreaks in just 15 days and 138 calls of fire in the month of April alone.  In summer the fire calls have increased by 30-35 per cent, fire officials have said.  

FOSTTA has been impressing on the municipal corporation and the fire department to train the local security staff in handling the emergency situations.

FOSTTA said the Surat Municipal Corporation’s (SMC) fire and emergency service department has decided to train the textile market people in fire extinguishing in the back drop of three consecutive major fire incidents in the textile markets. (KNN Bureau)
