Tirupur Garment Associations appeal govt to declare cotton as essential commodity

Tirupur, May 5 (KNN) In light of the exorbitant increase in cotton yarn prices by Rs 40 per kg, garment associations in Tirupur have urged the central government to list cotton under the Essential Commodities Act to regulate its supply.

To give impetus to this demand, the associations have unanimously decided to meet the K. Subbarayan, Member of Parliament of Tiruppur district and other Political Leaders of the region and explain them the plight of Tirupur garment sector and the condition of the working units.

They will request the MP and leaders to form a delegation to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Commerce and Textiles Minister, Piyush Goyal and Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman to address the issue.

A temporary ban on cotton has also been called by the associations assuring that no farmers are going to be affected as cotton is left with the traders only.

To ensure that domestic industries get required supply of yarn a temporary ban on yarn exports or calibration formula must be invoked, said the garment associations.

The discussion was held at the board room of Tiruppur Exporters Association (TEA) earlier this week and was attended by officials from South Indian Hosiery Manufacture Association (SIHMA), Tirupur Exporters And Manufacturers Association (TEAMA) and several other stakeholders associations like Knit Cloth Manufacturers Association (KNITcMA), Dyers Association Of Tirupur (DAT) etc.  (KNN Bureau)
