Chennai, Oct 17 (KNN) Tamil Nadu government has given financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh to each of the 18 fishermen who were rescued from the recent cyclone Phailin storm.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa met these fishermen to handover cheques to them, after they arrived here yesterday from Bhubaneshwar.

"Considering their poverty-stricken family situation, the Chief Minister handed over cheques of Rs one lakh to each of the 18 fishermen from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund," said an official statement.

The fishermen belonging to Kanyakumari district survived cyclone Phailin in Odisha, when their boats were hit off Odisha coast.

As their boats were unable to survive in the rough sea when the cyclone hit, they jumped into the waters and swam to the shore at Ersama in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha.

The Chief Minister had directed the officials to take the necessary steps to help the fishermen. (KNN/SD)
