Madurai, May 15 (KNN)  The Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (Maditssia) has appealed to the state government to introduce weekly power holiday to ensure uninterrupted availability of electricity for medium and small industries.

Tamil Nadu could be divided in to six regions, each having a weekly power holiday in rotation, it said, in its list of suggestions submitted to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission during a public hearing on tariff revision held recently.

“Our State is reeling under severe power shortage and it is affecting the medium and small industries.  Though the Electricity Board announces an eight-hour mandatory power cut, in practice the duration is extended by several hours. If uninterrupted power supply is maintained for five days a week, it will help the units to plan their production and engage the labourers effectively,” said a media report quoting President of Maditssia V S Manimaran.

Further, considering that electricity generation was inadequate and small-scale industries were starved of electricity, new power connections for large-scale industries should be avoided, the industry body pointed out.

Among the other recommendations was for the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation to accept applications for extra power requirement for construction activities on payment of extra charges.

However, a higher tariff should be levied for lavish illumination and collect a minimum charge of Rs 5,000 for using power for public meetings by political parties and others.
Maditssia has also opposed the proposal to increase evening peak-hour restriction by two hours from nine PM to eleven PM.  (KNN)
