Bhopal, May 16 (KNN)  The Department of cottage and rural industry of Madhya Pradesh has been selected to receive the United Nations Public Service Award for the year 2013 for promoting gender responsive delivery of public services.

In MP, women’s self-help groups manage rural haats or weekly markets and it was this novel initiative that helped bag the award.  Management of the markets has not only empowered the women and strengthened the groups but has also helped them to access resources.

The decision to hand over management of rural "haats" to women’s self-help groups (SHGs) according to a report has increased their economic self-reliance and participation in social decisions.

Started over a decade ago, rural haats are still in operation MP and are run successfully across the state without external support.

According to UN Public Administration Programme, the United Nations Public Service Awards is the most prestigious international recognition of excellence in public service. It rewards the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions that lead to a more effective and responsive public administration in countries worldwide.
Through an annual competition, the UN Public Service Awards promotes the role, professionalism and visibility of public service.

Other categories for which awards will be presented are Preventing and Combating Corruption in the Public Service, Improving the Delivery of Public Services, Fostering participation in public policy decision making through innovative mechanisms; and Promoting Whole-of-Government Approaches in the Information Age.  (KNN)
