Cold Wave Drives Delhi’s Peak Power Demand To 5,213 MW
New Delhi, Jan 1 (KNN) Delhi has recorded its highest-ever December power demand, reaching 5,213 MW on Tuesday morning, as plummeting temperatures drive increased energy consumption across the capital.
This unprecedented surge marks the first time the city's power demand has exceeded 5,000 MW during December, surpassing previous records of 4,884 MW in 2023 and 4,964 MW in 2022.
The winter power consumption pattern appears to be following the trajectory set during summer, when the city witnessed a record-breaking demand of 8,656 MW.
According to officials, winter power demand is expected to climb further, potentially reaching 6,300 MW, following last winter's peak of 5,816 MW recorded on January 22.
BSES, a major power distribution company in Delhi, reports that green energy will meet up to 53 percent of the over 3,900 MW peak power demand in areas served by BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL).
The company has already successfully managed peak winter demands of 2,194 MW and 1,038 MW in their respective regions, with projections indicating these figures could rise to 2,600 MW and 1,240 MW.
Meanwhile, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) reported meeting its highest winter season demand of 1,646 MW on Tuesday without any service disruptions.
The company attributes this success to network strengthening and preventive maintenance measures implemented in preparation for the winter season.
Power distribution companies are employing advanced technology to manage the increasing demand, with BSES notably utilising Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning tools for accurate load forecasting.
These preparations reflect the utilities' efforts to maintain reliable power supply during Delhi's increasingly demanding winter months.
