KCCI Partners With Industry Bodies To Tap Into Kashmir’s Jewellery Export Potential
Srinagar, Aug 31 (KNN) In a significant development for the region's economy, the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) has partnered with key industry bodies to explore the untapped potential of Kashmir's jewellery exports.
A landmark outreach programme was held in Srinagar, aimed at educating local merchants about entering the international market.
The event was jointly organised by KCCI, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) North Region, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), and ECGC.
Industry leaders and local gold and diamond jewellery merchants participated in the programme, which was attended by Vikramjit Singh, Commissioner of Industries and Commerce, as the Chief Guest.
KCCI President Javed Ahmad Tenga described the event as a turning point for Kashmir's jewellery sector. In his welcome address, Tenga emphasised the importance of hosting international and national exhibitions in Srinagar to provide opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
He also proposed the establishment of a state-of-the-art testing lab for gems and jewellery, along with a skill development centre in Srinagar.
The programme featured presentations from various industry experts. Ashok Seth, Regional Chairman of GJEPC North, shared insights on GJEPC's journey and stressed the importance of membership for merchants seeking to enter the export business.
A K Bhushan, Deputy Director, DGFT, provided a comprehensive explanation of the process to initiate a jewellery export business.
Sanjeev Bhatia, Regional Director North, presented the functions and activities of the Council, highlighting support available for participation in international exhibitions.
ECGC Manager Rahul elucidated on policies designed to assist exporters. Bashir Ahmad Rather, President of the All Kashmir Gold Dealers & Workers Association, emphasised the importance of providing opportunities to local merchants in events and skill development programs.
In his address, Commissioner Vikramjit Singh commended the efforts of GJEPC and KCCI in organising this first-of-its-kind outreach program in Kashmir.
He acknowledged the region's hidden potential in the gem and jewellery industry, which had remained largely unnoticed despite an abundance of skilled manpower.
Singh pledged full government support to local associations and artisans, aiming to enhance the export potential of Kashmir's gem and jewellery sector.
This initiative marks a significant step towards integrating Kashmir's jewellery sector into the global market, potentially opening new avenues for economic growth and employment in the region.
The collaboration between local industry bodies and government officials demonstrates a concerted effort to harness the region's skilled workforce and traditional craftsmanship for economic development.
