Noida, Jul 15 (KNN)  The Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) has started a survey of 35 industries placed under the red and orange categories, in order to find the levels of pollution caused by them.

Those industries were placed under the red and orange categories because they had been causing severe pollution.

Earlier this month, the National Green Tribunal had ordered industries to phase out old diesel-run generators that did not have proper acoustic enclosures within two weeks.  Further, many industries operating without proper pollution control devices were ordered for closure.

The tribunal had also ordered UPPCB to report industries causing air pollution through adulterated or inferior quality fuel to the authority dealing with essential commodities orders.

The Noida Authority has been asked to implement a scientific solid waste management system apart from checking pollution arising from construction activities.

Two months ago, after notices had been issued to the industries, they had claimed to have installed state-of-the-art pollution control devices.

In a survey report presented to the tribunal, the pollution control board had neither specified the industries that were found to be polluting nor had mentioned those units which had not duly complied with the consent conditions.

"It is also not clear whether all such industries have been directed to be closed down under the provisions of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 or the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986," said a media report quoting the tribunal.

The survey was conducted by a team of pollution control board officials who collected samples of waste water and air from the units for analysis.

Following the survey, the board specified in its report the actions initiated against polluting industries with details.  It included names of the industries, nature of activities undertaken by them, their respective production capacities and action taken against those units which have not installed proper pollution control measures.

Also, a bench of the tribunal, headed by Justice VR Kingaonkar, had passed the orders earlier this month based upon a report of an expert committee constituted to study the 'causes' and 'extent' of pollution in Noida.

Both UPPCB and Noida Authority have been directed to submit action-taken reports before the next date of hearing.

The Industries that have been ordered for shutdown are located in Phase I, II and III and engaged in electroplating, phosphating and metal surface treatment. These industries lack proper fume collection systems and pollution abatement measures like 'scrubbers' which are essential to improve ambient air quality.  (KNN)
