Kolkata, Jan 17 (KNN)  A universal vegetable processing and training centre for tomato powder will come up at Jalpaiguri in West Bengal on public-private-partnership (PPP) model. The nodal agency for the project is Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority (SJDA).

The Agricultural and Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA), Department of Commerce, Government of India has identified the District of Jalpaiguri, in the State of West Bengal, for setting up an Agricultural Export Zone (AEZ) for vegetables.

The entire area is known for various agro climatic atmospheres suitable for growing tomato and other vegetables. There is ample loss of tomatoes (nearly about 50 per cent) in the peak season as storage life of fresh tomatoes is only 4 to 6 weeks.

It has been observed that due to lack of proper infrastructure for processing industries, mostly functioning in unorganized sectors, wastage is very high.   To curb the wastage of tomatoes, a vegetable processing and training centre for tomato powder and other allied products was proposed to be developed.

SJDA had acquired a plot of land of 10 acres 15 kms from the town of Jalpaiguri for the project.  The estimated project cost is Rs. 17 crores.

It now seeks partners to develop, operate and manage the unit on design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) basis.

The scope of work will broadly include designing, engineering, financing, procurement, construction, operation and maintenance of the project.

The major components of the work would involve raw material store, semi processed materials store, finished goods store and packing material store, processing floor, test laboratory, general store, seeds and fertilizer store, classrooms (2 nos), library and reading room, faculty room, administrative block, toilets, canteen, security room, underground reservoir with fire hydrant, tube well for drinking water, water treatment plant, truck and car parking area, overhead reservoir, 200 KVA generator, solar lighting, solid waste treatment plant, furniture and office equipment.

The procurement, operation and maintenance of the tomato processing and tomato powder making unit would have to be done in compliance with environmental laws during implementation of the project - that is development, operation and maintenance of the project.

Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority has been established under the West Bengal Town and Country (Planning and Development) Act 1979 (West Bengal Act - XIII of 1979) and has been entrusted with the responsibility of Planning and Development of Siliguri - Jalpaiguri Planning Area.   (KNN/ES)
