West Bengal Assembly passes resolution to change name of State to Bengal

Kolkata, Aug 29 (KNN) West Bengal Assembly today passed a resolution to change the name of the State to Bangla in Bengali, Bangal in Hindi and Bengal in English.

Terming this as historic, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee greeted the people of the State.

“I am sure people will be happy with the name ‘Bangla’ or Bengal. There was a need for ‘branding’ for Bengal. Our intention is to make Bengal the best in the world,” she said, according to a press statement.

When asked if the new name will cause confusion with Bangladesh, CM replied: “There is a Punjab in Pakistan also. There is no confusion over Bangla and Bangladesh.”

She slammed the Opposition for playing politics over the name of the State. She said, “They have committed another historic blunder. Congress has become a frontal organisation of the CPI(M).”

Paying homage to the icons and stalwarts related to Bengal, she said in future the government will also come up with a logo for the State.
