Union Family and Health Minister J P Nadda has said that the government is committed to provide safe food for people right from the street vendors to the big industries.

Speaking to the reporters on the side-lines of a conference organised by the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) in New Delhi, Nadda said the government has given training to 23000 vendors on food safety in Delhi and has certified them too.

“Demand of this training programme has increased,” he informed

Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 on Monday completed a decade of its enactment.

To mark the completion of a decade of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) organized an event here.

The event comprised of two panel discussions on ‘Food Safety in the unorganized sector:  Challenges and opportunities’ and ‘Food Safety: A shared responsibility’.

Speaking on FSSAI’s efforts, the Minister, who was the Chief Guest at the event, said “FSSAI has increased its scientific panels and established an authority through scientific examination. They have succeeded to maintain the safety standards. Now we are making efforts to spread awareness about the food safety in every sector whether home, offices, schools, processing units.”

Stressing on the need to promote awareness about food safety, he stated that it is necessary that safety related things should be made online. Regulations on food and safety standards have been made and now it’s time to create awareness about this.

While addressing the conference, the Minister said adoption of global safety standards would boost domestic demand and exports of agro-based products, thereby generating huge employment opportunities.

The Centre will support the state governments in capacity building and setting up of high quality labs for proper enforcement of food safety standards, said Nadda. (KNN Bureau)
