The responsibility of the safety of the workers and safe working standards in the industry is on the shoulders on the top management, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation MD, Dr. Mangu Singh said in his address during the 6th National Conference on Workplace Safety.

Singh highlighted that the workers safety can be ensured only if there is dedicated technological framework for the same along with discipline.

Dr. Singh added that risk analysis and development of method statement were other integral components for construction work. These discuss in detail the line of command, responsibility of the workers and the method of work.

He further added that toolbox talks have also been introduced to explain to workers about the risks and the ways to avoid them.

Highlighting the set of initiatives in the DMRC, Singh informed The Delhi Metro has recently launched a safety manual which described in detail the requisite safety measures and equipment that must be in place to ensure a safe work environment.

Singh asserted that mishaps have a demoralizing effect on workers and it could cause setbacks to a project, and added that third part audits were being undertaken to ensure that safety standards were met. The workers at the lowest level were exposed to maximum risks as they directly come in contact with machines, equipment and material on the manufacturing and construction sites. Therefore, it was the responsibility of the top management to safeguard the interests of the workers by implementing safety measures.

DMRC chief made these remarks during the 6th National conference on workplace safety on the theme ‘Excellence in Workplace Safety’ organized by FICCI. (KNN/ DA)
