WIPO to open centres in Punjab-Tamil Nadu to bring academia-industry together for IPR: Sitharaman

Eyeing at increasing awareness with regard to the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection and mechanism in the country, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in collaboration with Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM), under Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) will be setting up two IPR centres, one in Punjab and another one in Tamil Nadu. 

Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Nirmala Sitharaman made the announcement recently at the inaugural function of the three day workshop on Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs).

The Minister informed the centres in Punjab and Tamil Nadu will have dedicated team specialize d in innovation, technology, IPR protection, trade mark and patenting. This will enable the industry of the country secure their ideas and innovation.

Sitharaman added that the government is committed to keep abreast with the developments happening in the field of IPR at the global level, for this purpose a dedicated framework was formed and flagged green recently by the parliament.

She also informed about the setting up of special commercial courts that are meant to provide speedy solutions to cases related to the IPR and industry.

Also the government is facilitating an arbitration mechanism for the sector in case the stakeholders want to go for a settlement other than the formal court system, saving on time that used to get wasted in long trials.

The Minister was speaking at the inaugural function of the three day workshop on Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs), conducted by Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM), a professional body under the aegis of the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India.

Key government officials including Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Minister of State Kiran Rijiju were present at the event. (KNN/ DA)
