57th GST Council Meeting Set For September 12 In New Delhi; Officers’ Meet On September 11

New Delhi, Aug 31 (KNN) The 57th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council will be held in New Delhi on September 12, 2026, with an officers’ meeting scheduled a day earlier, according to an office memorandum issued by the GST Council Secretariat.

The Council meeting will begin at 11 am on Saturday, September 12, while the officers’ meeting will be held from 11 am on September 11. The venue and detailed agenda for both meetings will be communicated separately.

GST Registration Reforms May Be Discussed

The meeting is expected to consider measures to simplify GST registration for businesses that pass on tax credits exceeding Rs 2.5 lakh a month. The Council may also examine automation and other changes in the process of GST registration cancellation.

At present, central and state GST authorities do not follow a uniform procedure for granting registration to businesses meeting the specified tax-credit threshold. This has resulted in uncertainty for some taxpayers.

Meeting After More Than a Year

The 57th meeting will take place more than a year after the previous Council meeting. The 56th GST Council meeting was held on September 3-4, 2025, when the Centre and states approved a major restructuring of GST rates and slabs.
