Fearing fall in compliance rates, govt reiterates no waiving of penalty for delayed filing of GST

New Delhi, Oct 17 (KNN) With the different stakeholders eyeing at the council for relief on penalty incase there is delayed filing of returns under the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the government reiterated that there wouldn’t be any such waivers.

Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia made the announcement during a press interaction.

Adhia said that the waiving of penalty is not into consideration of the council at present.

Explaining further, the revenue secretary added that if the council was to decide providing relief on penalty, this might result in lesser compliance rates, which would prove detrimental in transition into the new tax regime.

He however maintained that if at all the council decides on any waivers, it will be given post factor and cannot be immediate as the government for now is looking at maintaining discipline under the One Nation One Tax regime.

Earlier, different industry bodies as well as traders association demanded that the initial months after the implementation of GST to be treated as a trial period and that no penal action should be imposed. (KNN/DA)
