New Delhi, Oct 8 (KNN) After receiving many complaints from traders against Flipkart’s ‘Big Billion Day’ sale, Commerce Ministry has decided to look into the matter and see whether there is a need for a separate policy or more clarity on the e-commerce retail businesses.

Flipkart had a 'Big Billion Day' sale on Monday offering heavy discounts on various products. However, it left many consumers, traders as well as consumer goods makers upset.
"We have received many inputs. Lot of concerns have been expressed. We will look into it," Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told reporters here.

"Now there are many complaints. We will study the matter... Whether there is a need for a separate policy or some kind of clarification is needed, we will make it clear soon," she added.

When asked whether the government is considering any particular policy for e-commerce retailing, she said the matter would be looked into.

The Big Billion Day raised concerns amongst the traditional retailers and also left many buyers disappointed.

Flipkart has said that its 'Big Bilion Day' sale saw 1.5 million people shopping at its portal. It also claimed that products worth over Rs 600 crore were sold in just 10 hours under the scheme.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, after receiving several complaints on it social network pages Flipkart issued an ‘Apology Letter’ to its customers.

Flipkart declared on Monday it had created Indian e-commerce history by engaging in USD 100 million (Rs 600 crore) worth business in just 10 hours of its discount sale.

“Yesterday was a big day for us. And we really wanted it to be a great day for you. But at the end of the day, we know that your experience was less than pleasant. We did not live up to the promises we made and for that we are really and truly sorry,” Flipkart’s apology letter said.

“It took enormous effort from everyone at Flipkart, many months of preparation and pushing our capabilities and systems to the limit to be able to create this day. We were looking at fulfilling the dreams of millions of Indian consumers through deals and offers we had painstakingly put together for months.

“And though we saw unprecedented interest in our products and traffic like never before, we also realized that we were not adequately prepared for the sheer scale of the event. We didn't source enough products and deals in advance to cater to your requirements. To add to this, the load on our server led to intermittent outages, further impacting your shopping experience on our site,” the letter added.

The Big Billion Day sale has even upset many big companies, some of whom have suspended fresh sales to the online retailer and are even considering legal action for what they term as "predatory pricing", reports media.

LG, the consumer appliances major, has decided to not deal with the e-retailers at all. "We do not deal with them directly, and they are not our authorized trade partners," Sanjeev Agarwal, VP (sales) at LG Electronics India, told TOI. (KNN/SD)
