New economy needs carefully curated public discourse for addressing concerns related to unemployment

New Delhi, Apr 4 (KNN) To discuss the need for new public policy discourse and reason behind jobless growth, CUTS International and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) organized a roundtable on ‘New Public Policy Discourse’ here.

The round table focused on addressing challenges related to economy and society emanating from stranded capacities and unemployment.

The discussants acknowledged that there is a need to put out well curated discourse across disciplines and stakeholders while ensuring that it grows in impact and relevance even as it reaches winder constituencies.

It was acknowledged that the need for a holistic discourse multiplies manifold in the wake of recent developments happening in the socio-economic sphere, according to the release.

Be it the jobless growth or the uncertainty in effects of technology change, climate change and political changes, the threat to a secured development strategy is on a rise, the release said.

The participants, while mentioning the major concerns that bothered them, stressed on the complex linkages between the various factors affecting the society and the economy in the times yet to come.

For instance, the central notion of unemployment is deeply affected by the social changes, the macro-economic changes, the demographic changes and the governance factors, release said.

It added, this also has implications on the health ecosystem, the education ecosystem and other important spheres of development.

To unfold a complex issue like this, the constraint of the trade-off between quality and reach of such dialogues was also highlighted by Arun Maira, Former Member of Planning Commission.

Hence, the need for striking a thoughtful balance between the richness of such dialogue and the scale on which they occur becomes vital for a constructive output.

The roundtable concluded that “jobs” could be one catalytic idea around which a detailed discourse could be built for larger societal well-being. (KNN/JM)
