Over 10.23 mn taxpayers file IT returns online till Aug 5; collections up by 13.27% this financial year

New Delhi, Aug 7 (KNN)  More than 10.23 million taxpayers filed their income tax returns online this fiscal till August 5 which is a 68 per cent jump compared to the last fiscal.

According to the latest data released, more than 8.7 million salaried class taxpayers filed their tax returns online this year, registering an overwhelming rise of 85 per cent in this category as compared to the last time.

"12.3 million Returns have been e-filed till August 5, 2013 which is 68.3 per cent higher than 7.3 million returns e-filed in the corresponding period during last year. Upto August 5, 8.7 million returns were e-filed under ITR 1 and ITR 2 (salaried class of taxpayers) which is 85.8 per cent higher than the 4.6 million returns e-filed under ITR 1 and ITR 2 in the corresponding period last fiscal," the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said in a an official statement.

CBDT had extended the last date for filing of I-T returns till August 5 from July 31, for assessment year 2013-14, both manual and e-filed.

“The due date for filing of Income Tax Return for Individuals, HUFs and non-auditable cases for A.Y. 2013-14 was extended by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) from 31st July to 5th August, 2013 as there was an overwhelming response to e-filing from every corner of the country,” said CBDT.

About 0.6 million lakh returns were e-filed alone on August 5 alone, the last date of filing.

Electronic filing has been made mandatory for assesses having net taxable above Rs five lakh from this year.

Meanwhile, Gross direct tax collections during April-July of the Financial Year 2013-14 is up by 13.27 per cent at Rs 1,57,169 crore as against Rs 1,38,751 crore in the same period last year, said Ministry of Finance in an official release.

Also, gross collection of corporate taxes has shown an increase of 9.75 per cent and stands at Rs 92,115 crore during April-July in fiscal year 2013-14 as against Rs 83,932 crore in the same period last year, the release further added.

Gross collection of Personal income tax is up by 19.32 per cent to Rs. 63,583 crore this year as against Rs 53,289 crore last year.

Net direct tax collections is up by 10.37 per cent and stands at Rs 1,16,645 crore, as compared to Rs 1,05,684 crore in the same period in the last fiscal. 

The collection of Securities Transaction Tax (STT) is Rs 1267 crores.

The Wealth Tax has posted a growth of 38.62 per cent to Rs 201 crore from Rs 145 crore during the same period in the last year.  (KNN/SD)
