Proposed GST rates on goods of ‘mass-consumption’ must be reviewed: CAIT

New Delhi, June 10 (KNN) With less than 20 days remaining for the roll out of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in the country, there are concerns on the GST rates on goods that are consumed by masses at large, The Confederation of All India traders has approached the government in this regard.

The CAIT informed that it has requested the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address these concerns.

CAIT in a letter to the Prime Minister said that the Association is in full favor of the GST and is with the Government of India in implementing the biggest reform in the Indian taxation history.

It further said that the traders’ body is of the view that in the long term GST is likely to bear positive socio-economic impact for the nation.

CAIT however wants the PMO to look at the goods that are for the common man and falls in the category of Mass Consumption. A GST triggered price hike in such goods might make it difficult to be accessed by the common man.

This would also slowdown the governments agenda of moving towards inclusive progress, the traders’ body said.

CAIT is of the view that the allotment of tax slabs for certain goods are placed in a higher tax slab, which on one hand might be good in terms of fetching revenue but on the other hand might bear implications contrary to the government’s inclusive policies.

The One Nation One Tax – GST is in its final phase before the implementation that is scheduled for July 1 this year. (KNN/DA)
