Mumbai Dabbawala have annual turnover of 70 to 80 crores despite minimal use of technology

Mumbai, Sept 1 (KNN) Presently there are 5,000 Dabbewalas in Mumbai delivering Tiffin to two lac customers having an annual turnover of 70 to 80 crores, said the grandson of Mumbai Dabbewalas founder adding that the Dabbawalas are very punctual and accurate despite minimal use of technology.

The Young Business Leaders Forum organized a talk by Subhash Talekar and Arvind Talekar on Mumbai Dabbewalas ‘An Entrepreneurial Success Story’ recently at PHD House, New Delhi.

Talekar, whose grandfather founded the Mumbai Dabbewalas, made a detailed presentation of the service delivery of Mumbai Dabbewalas.

Talekar informed that “The Mumbai Dabbewalas who comprise of illiterate or semi illiterate individuals have never deliver wrong tiffin’s in its 125 years history and are very accurate as well as punctual in their service delivery. The use of technology is minimal and in spite of heavy traffic in the morning hours, the Dabbewalas avail bicycle and local trains to deliver tiffins to schools and offices. Also they have never been on strike.”

“A strict code of conduct is maintained and no leave is granted without prior information to the Team leader. If an individual makes an error, he is given one warning and if the mistake is repeated, the delivery man is fired,” he added.

“Presently there are 5,000 Dabbewalas in Mumbai delivering Tiffin to two lac customers having an annual turnover of 70 to 80 crores. The Mumbai Dabbewalas have been bestowed with numerous national as well as international recognition. They have been accorded ‘Six Sigma Performance’ rating, registered with Ripley’s as well as bestowed with the ISO9001:2000 certificate” Talekar informed.
