According to him, there are two elements to this point of view – how a company makes its profits and what it does with its profits.
What a company is expected to do with its profits is to distribute some of it to its owners and then keep some for reinvestment into the business, Venkateswaran explained, adding that part of its reinvestment is about working with communities and the environment it impacts.
Corporate social responsibility on the other hand is only a part of what a company does with its profits.
Venkateswaran goes on to talk about the Tata brand which regards the community not as a stakeholder, but as the very reason for its existence where profit making is just incidental to contributing to society.
Other areas he touches about during the interview are responsible business initiatives of the group, their governance practices, the Tata Code of Conduct and their framework on issues like sustainability.
