Goyal’s Canada Visit To Boost India-Canada Trade Talks Momentum: FIEO President
New Delhi, May 22 (KNN) The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) has welcomed Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s upcoming three-day visit to Canada from May 25, describing it as a step towards reviving stalled trade negotiations and deepening bilateral economic ties between the two countries.
CEPA Revival at the Centre
The visit comes at a significant moment, with India and Canada actively working to restart negotiations on a proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), alongside a shared ambition to grow bilateral trade to USD 50 billion by 2030.
FIEO President S.C. Ralhan said the visit reflects the commitment of both nations to rebuild economic engagement and accelerate CEPA discussions.
He noted that India and Canada share strong complementarities across sectors including agriculture, clean energy, critical minerals, food processing, education, and advanced manufacturing — areas that hold considerable potential for expanding trade and investment flows in both directions.
Opportunities for Indian Exporters, Especially MSMEs
Ralhan highlighted that a finalised trade agreement would open new market access opportunities for Indian exporters, with particular benefit to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Smoother trade procedures and greater collaboration in technology and innovation-driven sectors are expected to follow, he added.
Timely Engagement Amid Global Uncertainty
FIEO noted that the renewed India-Canada engagement comes at a critical juncture, with global markets facing mounting uncertainties from geopolitical conflicts, tariff disruptions, and shifting international trade alignments.
Enhanced bilateral cooperation, the federation said, would support diversification of trade partnerships and strengthen supply chain security for both economies.
The exporters' body also pointed to increasing momentum in ministerial exchanges and trade missions between the two countries in recent months, expressing confidence that the Minister's visit will provide fresh impetus to CEPA negotiations and lay the groundwork for deeper economic integration.
