India Exports GI-Tagged Rewa Sundarja Mangoes to UAE for the First Time
New Delhi, Jun 29 (KNN) The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first commercial export of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Rewa Sundarja mangoes from Madhya Pradesh to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), marking the variety's entry into international markets.
The first consignment, comprising one metric tonne of GI-tagged Rewa Sundarja mangoes, was exported on June 26, 2026, by Salt Range Foods Pvt. Ltd.
The shipment was sourced from Seondha Farmer Producer Company Limited and farmer Sonu Gupta of Rewa district, with grading, sorting and export packaging carried out at an APEDA-supported packhouse in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, before being shipped via Varanasi Airport.
According to APEDA, the export follows months of coordination with the Madhya Pradesh Department of Horticulture, exporters, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), packhouse operators and overseas buyers to establish export linkages for the premium mango variety.
The export is expected to improve returns for growers in the Rewa region. While the mangoes typically fetch Rs 100–110 per kg in the domestic market, the exporter procured the produce at Rs 150 per kg, providing farmers with a premium of Rs 40–50 per kg.
Known for its sweetness, rich aroma, fibreless pulp and distinctive flavour, the GI-tagged Rewa Sundarja mango is expected to strengthen Madhya Pradesh's presence in premium mango exports and enhance the global recognition of region-specific Indian agricultural products.
A flag-off ceremony was held on June 26 to mark the first commercial shipment. APEDA said the initiative reflects coordinated efforts by the authority, the Madhya Pradesh government and other stakeholders to promote exports of GI-tagged agricultural products.
The authority said it will continue supporting exports of GI-tagged and value-added agricultural products by strengthening export infrastructure, improving compliance with international quality standards and expanding market access for Indian produce.
