Tesla's Potential Entry Into India Sparks Expectations Of Innovation Beyond EVs

New Delhi, Apr 18 (KNN) The Indian government is eagerly anticipating that Tesla's plans could extend beyond just EVs to encompass innovative projects like battery technology and Starlink internet services.

Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), expressed optimism that Musk's expected meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week could pave the way for Tesla to bring a range of cutting-edge projects to India, reported Moneycontrol.

"We are hopeful that the Tesla chief will bring all kinds of innovative projects to India, including EVs," Singh stated in an interview.

The Indian government's recently announced EV policy, which offers lower import duties for manufacturers, is not solely intended to attract Tesla but is open to any company seeking to enter the Indian EV market.

Singh clarified that the tax cut offered under the EV policy should not be considered a ‘concession,’ as the 15 per cent duty rate is the standard in most countries.

While speculation surrounds the potential announcements Musk may make following his meeting with Modi, likely scheduled for April 22, the DPIIT Secretary stated that it is for Tesla to provide clarification on their specific plans.

However, the Indian government is enthusiastic about the prospect of Tesla's entry into the country going beyond just electric vehicles.

The potential for Musk to introduce innovative technologies like battery systems and Starlink's satellite internet network has raised expectations for a broader embrace of cutting-edge solutions in the Indian market.
