New Delhi, Nov 16 (KNN)  As many as 30 garment exporters from India participated in the Australia International Sourcing Fair held in Melbourne from November-13 to 15.

“Exhibiting at the 'Brand India' pavilion in AISF gave an opportunity to place our business in front of thousands of qualified visitors including department stores, retail chains, importers, wholesalers, brand-owners, designers and agents,” said an Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) press release.

The Indian delegation to the three-day sourcing fair was led by the AEPC Chairman, A Sakthivel.  AISF is the only textile and clothing exhibition for the Australia and New Zealand region.

Speaking at the inauguration Sakthivel said, “Australia is a focus country for us, considering that India and Australia are at an advanced stage of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement.”

Further, with Australian buyers wanting to reduce their over dependence on China, the Fair, he said provided the right opportunity for Indian exporters to tap into the Australian clothing market.

Currently, India is the third largest exporter of garments to Australia with potential to boost business further.

“Garment exporters must take advantage to tap this huge USD 5.61 billion Australian apparel market. India’s apparel exports to Australia in 2012 were around USD 111 million,” he added.

Of the potential, “India’s garment industry has its inherent strengths in terms of good design and raw material strength, all big brands and chain stores are sourcing from India. It’s the most preferred destination for brands like Zara, Gap, H & M, Mango, Elcorte, Desigual, Tommy Hilfiger, etc. Prominent chain stores like Walmart, C&N, H & M, JC Penny, Target, Sears, Marks & Spencers, H&M, Debenham, Primark, Top Mom, TESCO, etc are sourcing garment from India,” Sakthivel said.

Also, he thinks India is very good at producing sports items which can be delivered in short lead time.

At the fair, Indian exhibitors displayed high fashion ladies garments, scarfs, beach wears, men’s wear, denim, etc.   (KNN/ES)
