CAIT hails EU investigation into Amazon business model

New Delhi, July 18 (KNN) Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) which is in forefront for complaining mal-practices in E-Commerce business welcomed the investigation opened by European Union (EU)into Amazon's anti-competitive conduct.

Opening investigation by EU amply endorses the complaints of CAIT which is being made against global e-commerce players conducting business activities in India, said Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary General CAIT.

He stated that as per information gathered from online sellers Amazon sells products on its website as a retailer and also it provides a marketplace where independent sellers can sell products directly to consumers.

CAIT has been receiving complaints from sellers selling on marketplaces regarding the discrimination, unfair treatment and unjust policies of the marketplaces and its relation with certain controlled sellers like Cloudtail and Appario in Amazon and Retailnet, Omnitech Retail, SupercomNet etc in Flipkart which has greatly vitiated the e commerce market in India since a long time and Authorities have taken no action, he added.

He said that Union and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has now looked in to the matter and sternly warned that no predatory pricing or any unfair practices will be allowed by the Government. It is in this context the CAIT is keenly awaiting rolling out of e-comerce policy.

Khandelwal has urged Goyal that it is time that government should also investigate e-commerce marketplace sector in the same way as EU is planning to investigate.
