New Delhi, Oct 25 (KNN)  Days after New Delhi agreed to permit Chinese power equipment firms to set up service centres in India, industry body IEEMA today sought a level-playing field from the government against cheap import of power gears from China.
 
“All we are saying is that the government should create a level playing field," President of the Indian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers Association Raj H Eswaran said here.
 
It was agreed during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh‘s recent visit to China that the Chinese companies would set up power equipment service centres in India by equipment suppliers.
 
With over 40,000 MW power projects under commissioning, India has become a big market for the Chinese equipment manufacturers. However, the aggressive Chinese bids have upset the domestic manufacturers- both in the large and small scale and medium scale segment.
 
Although the government has imposed 21 per cent import duty on power equipment, the domestic manufacturers are still feeling the heat from Chinese imports as several large power producers have shown their preferences for the Chinese equipment in the wake of aggressive pricing.
 
It is felt that opening of the service centres in India would further strengthen the position of the Chinese firms in the Indian market. (KNN Bureau/PC)
