New Delhi, June 25 (KNN) Government has extended the prohibition on import of milk and milk products from China for one more year till June 23, 2016.

“Prohibition on import of milk and milk products (including chocolates and chocolate products and candies/ confectionary/ food preparations with milk or milk solids as an ingredient) from China is extended for one more year, i.e., till 23.6.2016 or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification.

The matter has been reviewed and the prohibition on import of milk and milk products from China is extended for one more year, i.e., till 23.6.2016 or until further orders, whichever is earlier, it added.

DGFT in 2008 had ordered ban on imported milk and milk products from China as these had Melamine contamination. Melamine is used for making plastics and fertilizer.

The ban was first ordered by DGFT in September 2008 for "three months" as an interim measure to enable other departments to put in place suitable measures to restrict import of contaminated milk products in India. (KNN Bureau)
