New Delhi, May 22 (KNN)  To protect the security and privacy of its customers, eBay has asked all its users to reset their passwords owing to a cyber-attack that compromised a database containing encrypted passwords and other non-financial data.

“On Wednesday, we announced that we are asking all eBay users to change their password. This is because of a cyber-attack that compromised our eBay user database, which contained your encrypted password,” said President, eBay Marketplaces, Devin Wenig in a statement on eBay website.

eBay however, has assured its clients that their account is protected.  “Because your password is encrypted (even we don’t know what it is), we believe your eBay account is secure. But we don’t want to take any chances. We take security on eBay very seriously, and we want to ensure that you feel safe and secure buying and selling on eBay. So we think it’s the right thing to do to have you change your password,” Wenig said.

The company has also suggested that customers always use different passwords for different sites and accounts.   “If you used your eBay password on other sites, we are encouraging you to change those passwords, too,” eBay’s President said.

The next time customers visit eBay, the company recommends that they take a moment to change their passwords and update the same periodically to ensure they are protected.  It has also suggested that they use different passwords on different sites and accounts.

In the meantime, in an effort to making eBay as safe and secure as possible, the company is looking at other ways to strengthen security, which includes introducing new security features in the coming days.

According to media reports eBay has 145 million users.  Several small and medium enterprises sell their products on the multinational internet consumer to consumer corporation headquartered in San Jose, California, USA.  (KNN/ES)
