Eight of top 20 ports belong to China

Shanghai, Shenzhen, Zhoushan, Guangzhou, Qingdao and Hong Kong are listed among the top container ports of the world.
Dubai (UAE), Rotterdam (the Netherlands), Hamburg (Germany), Antwerp (Belgium), Los Angeles (USA), Tanjung, Pelepas (Malaysia) and Long Beach (USA) are the other major ports of the world according to the data compiled by the port of Rotterdam authority.
According to the report of the Shipping Ministry, the cargo traffic at India’s 12 major ports, which accounts for 58 per cent of the country’s total sea borne cargo showed a decline of 2.6 per cent in 2012-13.
“The growth in total cargo throughput at major ports remained negative in all the quarters of 2012-13,” it said.
While Shanghai handled the container traffic of 31.7 million twenty foot equivalent unit (TEUs), India’s largest port Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) handled 4, 259 TEUs in 2012-13. (KNN/GUNJ)
