ICA Hosts 3rd International Conference on Indo-UK Commercial Dispute Arbitration

New Delhi, Jun 13 (KNN) The Indian Council of Arbitration (ICA) successfully hosted the 3rd edition of its International Conference on “Arbitrating Indo-UK Commercial Disputes” during the prestigious London International Disputes Week (LIDW) 2025. 

The event focused on the theme “Synergising India-UK Arbitration Practices” with insightful panel discussions on hybrid dispute resolution models and enhancing mechanisms for trade and investment.

The Conference was inaugurated by the Chief Justice of India, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, who emphasised the historical roots of arbitration in Indian traditions and stressed the importance of strengthening cross-border dispute resolution frameworks. 

He noted India’s rising global economic role and the need for strong arbitration institutions.

Delivering the keynote address, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal echoed the Prime Minister’s vision of promoting alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms. He underlined how a robust ADR ecosystem not only supports business confidence but also reduces court burdens.

UK Supreme Court Judge, The Rt Hon Lord Michael Briggs, highlighted the similarities between Indian and UK arbitration laws and how the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) could enhance bilateral commercial ties through improved arbitral cooperation.

India’s High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram K. Doraiswami, noted the significance of the FTA and the vital role of effective dispute resolution in encouraging innovation and growth across both nations.

ICA President N G Khaitan, Director General Arun Chawla, and barrister Karishma Vora also shared key insights, underscoring India's growing credibility in arbitration and mediation, citing over 7.5 lakh cases resolved through Lok Adalats between 2016 and 2025.

Established in 1965, the ICA continues to play a pioneering role in promoting institutional arbitration in India, adjudicating claims exceeding Rs 4,000 crore annually.
