India, Argentina Ink Deal To Boost Lithium Exploration & Mining
New Delhi, Feb 20 (KNN) In a significant move to enhance bilateral cooperation in critical minerals, India and Argentina have formalised a partnership focused on lithium exploration and mining through a new memorandum of understanding.
The agreement was signed on Wednesday in New Delhi between Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL), operating under India's Ministry of Mines, and the Provincial Government of Catamarca, Argentina.
The accord emerged from high-level discussions between India's Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, and Catamarca Governor Raúl Alejandro Jalil.
Their meeting centred on expanding collaboration in mining operations, with particular emphasis on lithium exploration and investment opportunities.
Argentina's position within the resource-rich 'Lithium Triangle' makes it a strategic partner for India's growing needs in electric vehicle battery production and renewable energy storage systems.
The talks highlighted ongoing lithium exploration initiatives by Khanij Bidesh India Ltd. (KABIL) and Greenko in Catamarca province, while examining potential avenues for increased Indian corporate participation in Argentina's mining sector.
Both nations discussed frameworks for investment, long-term supply agreements, and joint ventures to strengthen India's access to this vital mineral resource.
The delegation addressed crucial aspects of mining cooperation, including policy frameworks, regulatory compliance, and sustainable practices.
The partnership also emphasises knowledge sharing and infrastructure development to enhance India's presence in Argentina's mining industry.
This collaboration marks a significant step forward in securing critical mineral supply chains and is expected to create new opportunities for Indian companies in Latin America's mining sector.
