India Should Exercise Caution On US-Led Gaza Peace Board: GTRI Report

New Delhi, Jan 21 (KNN) India faces a sensitive strategic decision after being invited to join a US-led Gaza Peace Board chaired by US President Donald Trump, according to a report by the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI).

The invitation comes as the Gaza conflict enters its third year and involves a framework operating outside established United Nations mechanisms.

Announced on January 15, 2026, the board is intended to oversee post-war stabilisation and reconstruction in Gaza.

Concerns Over Legitimacy

GTRI cautioned that participation could pose diplomatic risks for India, given its traditional support for multilateralism and international law, reported ANI.

The report highlighted the absence of Palestinian political representation as a key concern, warning that decisions taken by the board could be viewed as externally imposed and lacking legitimacy. It also noted that bypassing UN-led processes may undermine multilateral norms, an area where India has historically taken a principled stand.

GTRI further warned that linking humanitarian aid to security conditions could delay urgent relief efforts amid a severe humanitarian crisis.

Strategic and Reputational Risks

According to the report, the board’s composition and earlier statements by Donald Trump on Gaza’s redevelopment have raised concerns that reconstruction could prioritise commercial interests over Palestinian rights and consent.

While Israel is not formally represented, it retains significant influence over security and implementation, while Palestine has no direct representation.

GTRI suggested that India could continue humanitarian assistance to Gaza without formally joining the board, thereby avoiding potential diplomatic and reputational costs.

The report concludes that India’s engagement with Gaza should continue, but formal participation in the US-led board requires careful strategic assessment.
