Israel, a strategic market for Indian garment exporters: AEPC

New Delhi, Nov 27 (KNN)  The buyer selling meet (BSM) organised by the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) in Tel Aviv, Israel has opened up the apparel market not only in Israel but also the Middle East region.

“The 2nd BSM at Tel Aviv was very successful- participants got good business and many international buyers from Israel and Palestine visited the show. This show was organized once again with the objective to capture not only the Israel apparel market but also USD 11 billion apparel market of Middle East region,” said Chairman AEPC, A Sakthivel in a statement.

The event organised from November 25-26 was inaugurated by the Ambassador of India to Israel, Jaideep Sarkar and Chairman of Israel Export and International Corporation Institute, Ramzi Gabbay.

Sakthivel further observed, “Israel is the only country in the world that has FTAs with both the U.S. and the EU, making it a bridge between the continents.  By virtue of the North American Free Trade Area agreement (NAFTA), Israel also enjoys duty-free access to Canada and Mexico.

“This agreement, together with the Israel-Mexico FTA, allows Israel duty-free access to practically all of North America. Israel also has FTAs with Jordan, Egypt, Turkey and the Palestinian Authority. Therefore, it was in our strategic interest to enter the Israel market.”

Other dignitaries present were DCM, Embassy of India, Israel, Vani Rao, Executive Committee Member, Gautam Nairm Executive Committee Member AEPC, Lalit Thukral.
As many as 275 buyers visited the BSM, 32 of which were from Palestine, led by Syed Mubarak from the Embassy of India in Palestine.  Most of them were dealers of garments, furniture, fabrics and home furnishing.

Among the important brands present to source garments from Indian participants were Fox, H&O, Delta Galil, Cotton, Honigman, Gertrud, etc.

It was observed that the Israel/ Palestine market has enough potential; the people having good purchasing power.  Visitors and buyers at the event, according to Sakthivel were looking for good potential suppliers of readymade garments.

Israel’s imports from India in 2012 amounted to USD 29.7 million.

The AEPC Chairman further mentioned that last year’s participation in Israel generated business to the tune of USD 25.21 lakhs. 

AEPC has planned to participate in as many as 13 events across the world during the next year.  With adequate government support they hope to meet the target of 17 billion for the current fiscal.  Garment exports recorded a jump of 31 per cent in October 2013.  (KNN/ES)
